Attack of the Squirrels!!

This is Squirrelito. He's a nice little squirrel that occasionally visits my balcony. A few weeks ago I felt charitable and left a sugar pumpkin out for the squirrels. This was a giant mistake, as I had three squirrels fighting over it. Mongo Squirrel is the bully of the bunch and to tell you the truth, I'm a little afraid of him. But Squirrelito is the shyer one of the group and appears to have slightly better manners than the others.

Hmmm.. what's this? An unattended pumpkin sitting out in the cold? Must be for me!

Uh, say Squirrelito... you're really not as civilized as I originally thought!
Maybe you should put that on a plate... and perhaps you should be using a napkin!

Mmmmm! Pumpkin seeds! My favorite!!

Thank you for the treat! I hope I didn't make too much of a mess!!

Sorry little Squirrelito... I think this is your last handout!!

Photo Essay Friday: Mysterious Ways

I'm very excited to share with you my latest photo essay: Mysterious Ways. This series is all about the shapes, lines, and shadows of the human form. A little bit of yoga mixed with a lotta bit of mystery! Enjoy!!

Mysterious Ways
(written by U2)

Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon
Let her pale light in to fill up your room
You've been living underground Eating from a can
You've been running away
From what you don't understand...
Love
  Mysterious Ways 6

She's slippy
You're sliding down
She'll be there when you hit the ground

  Mysterious Ways 1

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways

Mysterious Ways 2

Johnny take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can't explain
To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you want to kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel
(on your knees boy)

  Mysterious Ways 7

She's the wave
She turns the tide
She sees the man inside the child

Mysterious Ways 3

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
Lift my days, light up my nights

Mysterious Ways 8

One day you will look... back
And you will see... where
You were held... how
By this love... while
You could stand... there
You could move on this moment
Follow this feeling

Mysterious Ways 5

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright (Love, love)
She moves in mysterious ways (Oh no, oh no)
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright (Move you, spirit, move, making love)
She moves in mysterious ways (Yeah, move, yeah, move, make love)

It's alright, it's alright, alright (You move with it, she moves with it)
Lift my days, light up my nights, love

Pretty, Sweet, Cute

A while back I wrote a post with the same title. I thought it would be fun to post another one. These may wind up becoming more frequent!

Pretty

Hydrangeas
Blue hydrangeas and white roses are fresh and elegant. The petals look like they were brushed with watercolors. Pretty and serene.

Sweet
  Cupcake
I don't know about you, but I look at this photo and can literally taste the cupcake! Perhaps that's because I have a major sweet tooth! I love how the pink frosting and raspberry pop out from the Tiffany blue background.

Cute
  _DSC3951
I love this photo. It's innocent and gentle and perfectly cute! A hug from my pretty, sweet, and cute cousin, and a look of adoration from an otherwise rascally pup! It's that glimmer in the my dog's eyes that gets me every time (especially when it's combined with a plea for a treat!).

So there you have it. A simple post to bring a smile to your face!

Website and Gallery Updates

Does something look a little different to those of you trying to access my website (www.jennyskinner.com)?? Well, that's because a few things have changed!

For some time, I have hosted my website using Apple's "Mobile Me" service, which is no longer supported as Apple has moved to iCloud.

What does this mean for you? First, it means that for the time being, this is my new website/blog. It also means that access to the Mobile Me Gallery is no longer accessible to view and download photos. These galleries are currently being migrated to a new site, which will be accessible through the "Gallery" tab.

Stay tuned for more updates to this website!

A Day in the Garden

I'm a bit of a daydreamer and have a vivid imagination. Similar to some athletes who visualize the game before they play, I like to visualize my photos before I take them. After thinking about the technical details, I like to dive into the emotions and the storytelling.

I shot these portraits at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Inspired by the flora and fauna, I wanted these photos to convey beauty, sweetness and the escape to innocence. I love the results and am transported to another world.

Jellybeans!!!

In February, I had a lovely time photographing candy hearts.  And today, I was inspired by a little bag of jellybeans that were sitting in my pantry! They're colorful, cute, fragrant, delicious, and a real treat to photograph. Plus, they're very easy to dispose of (wink wink).

Here's how I like to enjoy my jellybeans.... Warning: The following photos may cause cravings!!

A Furry Friend and Feathered Friends

When I walk my dog, I generally don't take a camera. I like to just spend time with the pup and take it all in. But this Sunday, I decided otherwise. So, I packed some gear and went on a nature walk.

First, I walked in the woods, but it was rather lonely and unexciting. So I turned around and headed towards the water.

The lake glimmered in the bright sunshine - not bad for a February afternoon! I came upon a gaggle of Canada Geese and as soon as they saw me and Dagny the dog, they started to honk. I couldn't help but laugh. Dagny's ears perked up (she loves birds) and I slowly pulled out my camera. This only aggravated the geese more, and one by one they jumped into the water. The last one on the shore decided to make a safer airborne getaway!

The honking continued while I snapped some shots. Then, realizing that the nearby residents may have had enough of the commotion, I continued on my walk.

Winter Bullrush

Next, I spotted three Mallard Ducks; one male and two female. It wasn't until I studied this photo that I realized just how pretty Mrs. Mallard is. Sure, she's not as flashy as her beau, but she is undoubtedly a very pretty bird.  And I love how the ripples in the water compliment the pattern in her feathers.

Mrs. Mallard

Of course, Mr. Mallard is a dashing fellow. I love the striking yellow bill, iridescent green head, white ring around the neck and the rich brown on his breast. And in addition, he has the cutest tail feather curls! What a handsome fella!

I bid adieu to Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and thanked them for trusting me and my furry friend.

Capture the moment.

Since my 2011 launch of Jenny Skinner | photo + design, I've been fine tuning my photographic style and brand. If you're a regular to my blog, you've probably noticed some design and color scheme changes over the past few months. This year I've swapped out the black and pink for a softer palette of grey, light blue, and mustard yellow. I find the cool grey and blue to be calming, and the splash of yellow to add some happiness and energy.

Additionally, I have several notebooks in which I've been scribbling down all sorts of words and phrases that help to define my photographic experience. I started to noticed a trend. Whether I was talking about a photo or writing about it, I kept describing "moments," which are basically visual vignettes.

Through my camera, I become a storyteller.... to capture the moment

A Snowy Day at the Farm

February has just begun. Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow, and despite the two incredibly warm weather days last week, winter is still here. There are some people out there who loathe the winter, insisting that it is dreary and bleak. And although last week's taste of spring has me yearning for warmer days, I still firmly believe that winter has it's beauty, too.

On Saturday, I spent the day at the farm with family. It was damp and chilly - a major departure from the spring like weather earlier in the week. As I sat in the house, I occasionally peered outside to the pastures behind the house, both belonging to different neighbors. It began to rain, changing into snow, but melting as soon as it touched the ground. Sitting by the fire, and admiring the scenery, I found the weather rather pretty.

I peered out of the window and noticed a few horses near the spot where the three properties met. The sky was dark, and it was wet outside, but I grabbed my camera anyway and headed outside. The horses were spooked and two of the three darted off. One horse remained. She looked at me and mirrored my movements. We met at the fence, but I could only get so close thanks to a barrier of branches and barbed wire. I called her the Chestnut Mare, after the song by the Byrds, and she spent some time with me. Then, she turned and trotted away.

I watched her return to the other horses and wiped the melted snow and rain from my camera. I headed back inside, when I suddenly realized that the cows in the neighboring pasture were all staring at me. And then they hurried over in my direction. My eyes grew large and I whispered "oh shit!" under my breath as I realized that I was protected by a wood fence that could be easily trampled. Thankfully, the cows slowed down and formed a line. I suppose they were just as curious as I was. One cow even mounted another for a better view of me (and was quickly corrected!). We gazed at each other for a few minutes, and then I returned to the house.

The Observers
Warm and dry back inside, I made the occasional pass by the windows, just to see what else was going on. This time, a massive bull was hanging out by the fence. I've since learned that mature bulls weight at least 2,000lbs. I haven't heard of bull attacks (matadors and rodeo cowboys excluded), so I came out to greet him and trusted that he was friendly. I think he was just as curious about me as I was about him. I spoke to him a little bit as I took his picture, thanked him, and returned to the house. He hung out by the fence for a little while longer, and then returned to the rest of the herd.

Too often the cold and damp weather appears uninviting. In this case, however, winter afforded me a quiet and peaceful moment with some curious animals who I hope to see more of in the warmer days ahead.

Double Bubble

Bubbles. Making kids happy since the dawn of time!
_DSC9763
I recently photographed a pair of lively twin boys- a challenge I thoroughly enjoyed! They warmed up to the camera right away and once the bubbles were airborne, I was able to shoot the way I like - natural and full of energy!

I definitely had my work cut out for me shooting twin three-year-olds. Sitting still was not an option and I'm glad of it. I think these photos really captured that little boy vivacity and mischievousness that I simply adore!

PS: As I do with many of my photos, I think this song is a perfect match!
